Lip Lift

We use our lips to talk and smile, but some people have a natural inkling to cover their mouths throughout the day because they’re unhappy with their appearance. For those who are looking for fuller, more pronounced lips with gorgeous corners and well-defined borders, a lip lift in Montreal with Dr. Fouda Neel may be the right choice.

What is a lip lift?

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that modifies the appearance of the lips through reshaping techniques. The procedure increases the prominence of the vermillion border (the red coloured area that is adjacent to regular skin). If your vermillion border is not clearly defined, it may look like your lips are either too thin, or simply a straight line with no contours.

A lip lift will rectify this situation by giving you a sharp yet aesthetically pleasing contrast between your vermillion border and the skin under your nose. Patients often visit Dr. Fouda Neel looking for lip augmentation, but it’s recommend that patients receive a lip lift as well to further enhance the area.

What is the difference between a lip lift and lip augmentation?

As previously mentioned, a lip lift is a surgical procedure designed to reshape the contours and borders of the lips whereas an augmentation is done by injecting dermal fillers into the lips to add volume. Dermal fillers are safe and create fuller, plumper lips.

Lip lifts on their own can fix a long upper-lip, down-turned corners, too much of an upper-teeth covering and remove smoker’s lines and the effects of aging. Couple that with a lip augmentation, and you will have the most desirable smile.

How is a lip lift performed?

Because everyone’s lips are different there are two procedures that can be done to lift the lips.

  1. Central lip lift: This procedure shortens the upper lip and moves the vermillion border up to create volume in the upper lip. Central lip lifts are performed by making a small incision under the nose where it will be hidden.
  2. Down-turned corners: This lip lift focuses solely on the down-turned corners of the mouth and also begins with a small incision. The difference is that this incision is made on the side of the mouth so that the surgeon can manipulate the corners into a more pleasing position.

How is the recovery process for a lip lift?

If you are having a lip lift you should be able to return to work within 4-5 days. The bruising and swelling is generally minimal with this type of procedure. As for pain management, most patients feel a slight discomfort that can be eased through over-the-counter painkillers. However, if you find yourself in severe pain, Dr. Fouda Neel will prescribe pain medication to help you feel at ease.

You should avoid exercising for at least a week following your procedure and do not smoke. Smoking will only delay the recovery process and could cause serious problems as your body tries to heal itself. If you have a lip lift with a lip augmentation, the same post-op care will apply.
