Labiaplasty

Just because a certain part of our body is usually covered with clothing doesn’t mean that it can’t cause us to feel insecure. Sometimes the external folds of skin that surround the vulva structure of the genitals can become enlarged due to childbirth, age, or excess fat in that area. Having distended labia can cause major discomfort for women, leading them to avoid intimate situations with their spouse/partner. Dr. Fouda Neel offers labiaplasty in Montreal and Riyadh. This surgical procedure is specifically designed to treat women with this problem.

What is a labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a plastic surgery that involves the reduction of excess tissue found in the external folds of skin – the labia majora and labia minora – that frame the vulva. If you find your labia to be aesthetically unpleasant and you have trouble wearing certain clothing, a labiaplasty is a permanent solution to this issue.

Sometimes patients undergo a labiaplasty in conjunction with a vagiolasty to ensure total vaginal rejuvenation. Labiaplasty is a very common surgery for women who’ve had multiple children.

How is this procedure performed?

During a labiaplasty your doctor will surgically create the perfect labia. The shape and size of your existing labia will be manipulated, shortened, and made to be even with the use of a precise surgical technique. The outer portion of your labia can also be reduced through liposuction.

Upon your initial meeting, Dr. Fouda Neel will discuss where the incisions will be made during your surgery and if liposuction is necessary.

What is the recovery process like after a labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a simple procedure with little to no risk involved. You may experience bruising and swelling of the genitals for a few weeks after your surgery. This should not be a cause for concern and this will correct itself as your body heals. The recovery time after this surgery varies from patient to patient but you will be able to resume your normal activities after one week. However, it is recommended that you avoid vigorous exercise for at least four weeks following your labiaplasty.

After having this procedure you will need to refrain from sexual intercourse for approximately one month in order to give your labia a chance to fully recover. You will also need to avoid the use of tampons for two weeks after your labiaplasty to ensure your healing remains on course.

If I’ve never had kids, can I still have this procedure?

Yes. Labiaplasty is not just for women who’ve had children. Even if you have not experienced vaginal childbirth, you may still suffer from enlarged labia caused by excess fat in that area.

Ideal candidates for labiaplasty are:

  • In general good health – you will need to disclose any existing medical conditions prior to your surgery and reveal any medication you may be taking
  • Non-smokers – if you do smoke, you will be asked to quit prior to your surgery
  • Women with fully developed labia – if you are under 18 it is recommended that you wait to have this procedure until after you have gone through puberty
