What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck corrects one or more of the following concerns:

  • Loose abdominal skin
  • Stretched and separated muscles
  • Excess fat in the lower abdomen

Am I a candidate for a tummy tuck?

The best candidates for abdominoplasty meet the following criteria:

  • They are in overall good health. Discontinuation of smoking 4 weeks prior to surgery is important to decrease the likelihood of skin necrosis, wound healing problems, and wider scars.
  • They are at a stable weight and are not planning to lose a significant amount of weight.
  • They are not planning future pregnancies that could stretch skin and abdominal muscles and undo the results of surgery. If you have an unplanned pregnancy, the safety of you and your baby will not be affected by a tummy tuck.
  • They are realistic about possible results. Your expectations and hopes for this procedure will be discussed openly during your consultation. It’s important to know that tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure, and it will leave scars.

What are the different types of tummy tuck?

Each tummy tuck Dr. Fouda Neel performs is personalized to the unique anatomy of the patient. When planning the surgery, he accounts for a variety of factors, including the amount of lax skin, the condition of the abdominal muscles, and the presence of any existing scars such as those from a C-section. In general, Dr. Fouda Neel performs the following types of tummy tuck procedures:

  • Full tummy tuck is appropriate for most patients, because it provides comprehensive tightening of the skin and muscles of both the upper and lower abdomen. This technique involves a horizontal incision between the hips and a second incision inside the belly button.
  • Mini tummy tuck provides skin tightening from the belly button to the pubic bone. It is used in select cases where patients do not need muscle tightening in the abdomen.
  • Extended tummy tuck continues the full tummy tuck around the hips to the sides of the lower back. This technique is often used for patients who have undergone significant weight loss and have significant excess skin around the hips.

Because of its versatility and transformative benefits, the tummy tuck is often part of post-weight loss body contouring surgery and mommy makeover procedures.

How is a tummy tuck performed?

Dr. Fouda Neel typically performs tummy tuck surgery with the patient under general anesthesia. The procedure takes about 2 to 5 hours to complete. He places a horizontal incision just above the pubic bone, at a place that underwear or swimsuits will easily conceal. If necessary, Dr. Fouda Neel will tighten stretched and separated abdominal muscles as he stitches them back together. He may also include liposuction of the abdomen, back, and waist to further enhance the resulting body contours.

What should I expect during recovery after a tummy tuck?

Patients usually go home the day of their surgery under the care of an adult for the first few days. Pain is typically moderate and may be controlled with prescription medication. Small drain tubes are left in place for a week or more to prevent hematoma and the buildup of fluid.

Healing is a gradual process: Expect to take a few weeks to become comfortable again. Scars will be elevated, thick, and red for a few months before gradually fading over the course of a year.

5 Keys to a Successful Tummy Tuck Recovery

  1. 1Wear an abdominal compression garment for at least 1 month (as directed by Dr. Fouda Neel) to decrease swelling.
  2. 2Avoid contracting the abdominal muscles for 8 weeks.
  3. 3Take 3 to 4 weeks of vacation time to give yourself time to heal.
  4. 4Postpone intense exercise for a minimum of 8 weeks.
  5. 5Refrain from smoking for 2 to 3 months after surgery.

How much does a tummy tuck cost?

The cost for a tummy tuck at our Montreal and Riyadh clinics depends on several factors, such as the surgical technique, the complexity of the procedure, and whether it is combined with other procedures. See our Tummy Tuck Costs page for more information.
