Chin Augmentation

Some people are unhappy with the look of their chin. They find their face lacks balance due to their undefined chin. Because our chins play a large part in our facial harmony, having a weak or small chin can be off-putting to some people. Dr. Fouda Neel often performs chin augmentation using an implant to help Montreal patients enhance the area and attain a more defined chin to create facial coherence and improve their overall look.

What is chin surgery?

If you’ve ever wanted to augment the shape, size, and total appearance of your chin, there are many options for you to do so. Chin surgery, aka genioplasty or mentoplasty are procedures done to give people more appealing chins and a stronger profile.

There are two different types of chin surgery; however, implantation (mentoplasty) is the most common and sought after procedure. Chin implants can be removed if need be and are made of synthetic materials that are not only completely safe, but they also feel like a real chin when touched.

On the other hand, genioplasty is a chin augmentation surgery that does not use an implant. Instead, this procedure involves moving your bone forward to increase the projection of your chin.

Can other procedures be done concurrently with chin surgery?

Yes! Many patients choose to have other cosmetic surgeries performed in conjunction with their mentoplasty. These procedures generally involve revamping and rejuvenating their overall facial appearance. Other surgeries often paired with chin augmentation are:

What happens during this procedure?

If you are having a mentoplasty done, your doctor will make an incision directly under your chin in the natural crease line or inside of your mouth where your gum meets lip. Your doctor will then manipulate the tissue found in that area to make a space for your implant to be inserted. The implant will be custom fitted to adhere to the contours of your face. Finally, your doctor will make use of sutures to close the incision made.

During a genioplasty procedure, incisions are also made in the same places as mentioned above. Next, your bone will be sculpted into a more suitable size before your doctor sutures up your incisions.

Both procedures can take up to three hours. No matter the type of chin surgery you choose, you will be anesthetized prior to ensure you are comfortable during your operation.

Who is a good candidate for chin surgery?

As with all cosmetic surgeries, you must be in good health in order to be considered an ideal candidate. Furthermore, your facial bones must have reached their physical maturity. This generally occurs in your mid to late teens. For younger individuals who feel they have a week chin, it is best that you wait until you are at least 18 years old before contemplating this procedure. Dr. Fouda Neel will sit down with you during your initial consultation to discuss candidacy and the other factors involved with a chin procedure.
