What is liposuction?

Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries in North America. Many people choose this procedure to refine certain areas that have not responded to healthy eating and consistent exercise. We commonly treat many areas with lipo at our Montreal and Riyadh clinics:

  • Abdomen (belly)
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Chin and neck
  • Upper arms

Because of its versatility, Dr. Fouda Neel often combines liposuction with other aesthetic surgery procedures to enhance overall results. It can be part of a tummy tuck, facelift, or breast reduction when fat removal will refine and enhance the results.

Am I a candidate for liposuction?

Liposuction is an excellent solution for people who want to shrink specific areas of fat that cannot be reduced with diet and exercise. It is not a weight loss treatment. Good candidates for liposuction are women and men who meet the following criteria:

  • Healthy
  • Stable weight
  • Nonsmoker
  • Have sufficient skin elasticity
  • Have realistic expectations about the outcome of their procedure

During your private consultation, Dr. Fouda Neel will review your medical history, talk with you about the improvements you hope to attain, and create a treatment plan personalized to you. If you are also bothered by excess loose skin, you may be a good candidate for BodyTite, a less invasive form of liposuction that also incorporates skin tightening.

How is liposuction performed?

Dr. Fouda Neel performs liposuction using IV sedation or general anesthetic, depending on the number of treatment areas and amount of fat being removed. He injects a large volume of tumescent solution into the areas of unwanted superficial fat to control pain and bleeding. This solution also makes the fat firm and easier to remove. Next, he makes tiny incisions near the targeted areas and inserts a hollow, stainless steel tube called a cannula into the fat. He moves the cannula in and out to break up the fat cells and suction them out of the body.

Procedures That Put Your Excess Fat to Good Use

  • Brazilian butt lift to shape and enlarge the buttocks.
  • Breast augmentation for a moderate size increase.
  • Facial rejuvenation as a natural alternative to dermal filler injections.
  • Revision procedures to improve the appearance of post-surgery defects

Are there medical uses for liposuction?

Yes. In addition to sculpting body contours, Dr. Fouda Neel uses liposuction to help with a variety of medical conditions:

  • Benign fatty tumours (lipomas)
  • Gynecomastia (i.e., the development of fatty breast tissue in men)
  • Lipid disturbances where fat collects disproportionately in certain parts of the body (lipodystrophy syndrome)

Can liposuction improve my health?

We all have two layers of fat in our bodies:

    • Deep (visceral) fat develops around the organs and can impact a person’s health if it builds up. This fat responds to diet and exercise and cannot be removed with liposuction.

Liposuction incision options

  • Superficial (subcutaneous) fat develops right below the skin. While it usually is not harmful, superficial fat is often the most difficult to reduce with positive changes in exercise and diet. This is the fat that can be removed with liposuction.

Losing subcutaneous fat can improve your appearance and even your self-image, but not your health. Losing deep fat is a good way to reduce cholesterol levels, blood pressure, diabetes symptoms, and other harmful health conditions.

What is liposculpture?

Liposculpture is another name for VASER Hi Def®, a type of liposuction that uses ultrasound energy to break up the targeted fat and makes it easier to remove. This advanced technology can create more precise, defined results in areas such as the abdominal muscles, upper arms, and hips.

What can I expect after the procedure?

  • You will feel groggy from the anesthesia/sedation you received prior to your liposuction surgery. Arrange for someone to drive you home.
  • You will experience swelling, bruising or pain – This is completely normal, and it will dissipate after about a week.
  • You will likely need to wear a compression garment on the part of the body that was treated to keep the skin tight.
  • You may need to take antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection, if you are prone to skin infections.

Recovery time varies from person to person, but most people report that they are ready to return to work within a few days.

How long do results last?

Liposuction is permanent if you take care of yourself. Once the fat cells are removed, they do not grow back. If you maintain a healthy lifestyle, the remaining fat cells will not get bigger.

How much does liposuction cost?

The price for a liposuction procedure depends on several factors, including the size and number of areas being treated, the specific areas themselves, and whether it is combined with other aesthetic surgery. Visit our Liposuction Costs page for more information.
